A share certificate is a safe way to earn dividends by investing in cash for a set period of time.
Share certificates are similar to certificates of deposit (CDs) except they are exclusively offered by credit unions. They are low-risk, and you don’t need much money to start investing. Altura offers two main types.
Altura allows you to invest in a certificate for terms between 3 months and 5 years. You only need $1,000 to get started! The longer you keep your money in the account, the greater the dividends you will earn. Note that you will not be able to withdraw your money early without penalty.

WATCH STORY“Altura is there for us when we need them with auto loans, any kind of home loans and just great service. When you walk into the branches they’re friendly, professional...
WATCH STORY“Even if you weren't a Member they would gladly help you become a Member quickly and be there for you, through anything.”
WATCH STORY“Their way of greeting you and taking their time— you’re not just a number there. You feel like a person, you feel like you matter.”
WATCH STORYThey are actually the same kind of investment. The difference is that a bank can issue CDs, while only a credit union can offer share certificates. Because of this, these investments are also insured by different organizations. While certificates of deposit are insured by the Federal Deposit Insurance Corporation (FDIC), share certificates are insured by the National Credit Union Share Insurance Fund (NCUSIF).
Share certificates, just like any kind of investment, do carry some risk to the investor. However, they are very safe and, thus, they are usually considered one of the best investments you can make. They are insured by the National Credit Union Share Insurance Fund for up to $250,000.
Once your money is in a share certificate, you are committing not to use it for the length of your term. Thus, if you decide you want to withdraw your investment early, you will be penalized. The price of your penalty will depend on the length of the term.
